The Australian High Commission’s Consulate in Lae was pleased to host a local launch of the Somare-Whitlam Award with Lae School of Nursing scholars recently.

The 18 Diploma of Nursing scholars and senior school staff joined Mr Brenton Kanowski, Consul-General to celebrate the start of their academic year and commencement as In-Papua New Guinea (PNG) Australia Award Somare-Whitlam Scholars.

All 2025 Australia Award scholarships have been co-badged as the Somare-Whitlam Awards, in recognition of PNG’s 50th anniversary of independence.

The unique In-PNG scholarships are prestigious awards offered by the Australian Government for study in PNG to meet critical workforce gaps, including midwifery, nursing and teaching. Scholarships are also available for women to take up cadetships to access careers in the maritime industry.

More than 3000 people have taken up In-PNG scholarships since 2012 and returned to their communities to deliver much-needed services. Applications for study in-PNG in 2026 will open soon.
