In May, newly graduated Australia Awards scholarship recipients from across Papua New Guinea gathered in Port Moresby for a two-day Re-engagement Workshop, marking their return home after successfully completing their studies in Australia.

The event welcomed a diverse cohort of returning alumni—representing a wide range of fields including public health, education, law, and justice—and celebrated the beginning of their journey as leaders contributing to PNG’s development. More than half of the participants are women, highlighting the growing role of women in shaping the country’s future.

Designed to support the transition from academic study to professional practice, the workshop encourages scholars to apply their learning and take on leadership roles in their workplaces and communities. Sessions focus on leadership, knowledge-sharing, and professional networking, including expert facilitation from the University of Queensland.

Participants were also introduced to the PNG–Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA), a national network of over 5,000 members committed to supporting development and collaboration across sectors.

The workshop comes at a significant moment for Papua New Guinea, as the nation commemorates 50 years of independence. Alumni were reminded that their new skills and experiences are needed now more than ever, to contribute to public service, policy reform, and community development across all regions of the country.

Australia Awards continues to be a key part of the broader PNG–Australia Partnership, enabling Papua New Guineans to access world-class education and return with the skills to drive change. The alumni now join a growing community of educated professionals who are leading efforts to build a stronger, more prosperous Papua New Guinea for the next 50 years and beyond.
