Australia Awards In-PNG Scholarships help Papua New Guineans to gain tertiary qualifications in key areas identified by the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia. These scholarships are offered through selected institutions in PNG.
By bringing expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into classrooms, graduates help inspire the next generation of learners and contribute to stronger educational outcomes for Papua New Guinea

The Government of Australia, in partnership with the Government of Papua New Guinea, will offer scholarships to undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (STEM) in 2026 at the University of Goroka.
This scholarship is for study in PNG only (not Australia).
It is open to women and men. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree in a science or mathematics field between 2021 and 2024.
Eligibility
To be eligible you must:
- meet the conditions of entry for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (STEM) at the University of Goroka
- be a citizen of PNG and residing in PNG at the time of application
- not have been convicted of a criminal offence
- not have been terminated from a previous Australia Awards scholarship
- demonstrate a genuine commitment to teaching science or mathematics at the secondary level in PNG, including a willingness to serve in rural and remote schools
- hold a relevant undergraduate (Bachelor) degree in science or mathematics between 2020 and 2024 and achieved a minimum GPA of 2.6. Refer to the list of eligible first degrees on the next page.
Eligible first degrees
In line with the University of Goroka’s entry requirements, applicants must have previously completed one of the eligible degrees below to qualify for the scholarship:
- Bachelor of Science (Biology)
- Bachelor of Science (Chemistry)
- Bachelor of Science (Mathematics)
- Bachelor of Science (Computer Science & Mathematics)
- Bachelor of Science Honors (Mathematics)
Benefits
The Australia Awards In-PNG Scholarship provides a comprehensive package of benefits. If you are offered a scholarship, you will be supported by Australia Awards PNG throughout your study. The scholarship covers:
- travel to and from your province of residence to your chosen institution (mobilisation and demobilisation)
- full tuition fees and on-campus accommodation (if you are residing on-campus)
- one-off establishment allowance
- fortnightly contribution to your living expenses
- a contribution to medical expenses
- participation in enrichment programs
- support for the transition into the workforce after graduation
- one-year associate membership of the PNG–Australia Alumni Association (upon successful graduation)
