Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development.  Scholars undertake long-term study and research in priority sectors at universities across Australia.  They develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links between Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the assessment and selection process for Australia Awards Scholarships Intake 2021 has been rescheduled to the following dates:

30 June 2020 Applications close
17 August – 21 September 2020 Shortlisting of candidates
26 – 31 October 2020 English language tests
26 October – 4 November 2020 Selection panel interviews
7 December 2020 Announcement of provisional awardees
December 2020 – February 2021  Institution placements, health checks and visa processing
11 – 29 January 2021  Pre-departure training in Port Moresby
April 2021 Awardees begin mobilising for Semester 2, 2021 commencement

Eligibility checklist

  • Citizen of Papua New Guinea
  • At least two years of work experience in your sector
  • Apply for a progressive qualification
  • Meet the Australian institution course requirements and all visa requirements (subclass 500)
  • Committed to return to PNG
  • Public servants must follow the Government of PNG training bid process. For more information, please refer to Department of Personnel Management.
You are not eligible if you:
  • Currently hold an Australian Government funded scholarship
  • Hold citizenship or permanent resident status in Australia
  • Are married or engaged to be married to someone who holds or is entitled to hold citizenship or permanent residency in Australia

Selection process

  • All applications are considered on a merit basis
  • Application assessment is completed by an independent panel
