Up to 20 Papua New Guinea Australia Awards Alumni members are converging on Port Moresby to hone their understanding of gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) issues.
The one-day professional development workshop will be run on Thursday, 3 August by the Australia Awards GEDSI advisor, Kate Wilson, and will focus on giving alumni a broad understanding of GEDSI themes and issues.
Attendees will receive gender analysis training and support for developing ideas to integrate what they have learned into their professional fields and communities to bring about many benefits.
Ms Wilson said a key theme of the workshop will be helping alumni develop strategies and approaches to achieve positive GEDSI results.
“We will look at what strategies have proved effective,” she said. “And along the way we will examine a great many myths and misconceptions that hold back the achievement of equality.
“Some attendees may find themselves surprised at how easily both men and women unwittingly accept and even support discriminatory beliefs and practices that, upon reflection, they would never approve of.”
